In order to get around Lakeland, a car is pretty much a necessity. Public bus services to exist to some locations but it is not very well developed at this point. Almost every destination is too far to walk, though from some places it is not completely impossible though still extremely inconvenient. Thus, in order to completely enjoy Lakeland, a car is extremely necessary.
